Build the future of legal work in Europe.
Job description
Legal AI is only as good as the knowledge behind it, and at Lefebvre Sdu we have been building that knowledge for 200 years. Day in, day out. Law by law. Word by word. We do it so carefully that other legal AI tools run on our data and software. From our Dutch office, we are also building our own platform for Lefebvre Group, Europe's leader in legal and tax knowledge: GenIA-L, which already accounts for more than €100 million ARR across Europe. Over 75,000 professionals use it every day, and we build it to the standard their profession demands. We are looking for a Senior Scala Engineer to make sure the foundation underneath it is rock solid.
HOW YOU’LL MOVE US FORWARD
Everything GenIA-L does starts with content. Legislation, case law and professional literature from more than 30 sources come in through our content pipeline, are stored and made available to the teams that build knowledge and AI applications on top of them. That pipeline is the backbone of our infrastructure. We are bringing its development further in-house, and you are the first senior engineer we hire specifically for that. You help build the in-house team that will own it completely. You get to know the existing infrastructure inside out, improve it step by step and take the technical lead. You think along about who we hire and help new engineers find their feet. Not everything needs rebuilding. This technology has been running for years and needs to last for years to come. You keep it reliable, and you see where new technology genuinely adds something.
Job requirements
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You're a senior engineer who knows Scala well and gets energy from software that matters. You don't need to rebuild everything to make an impact, because in existing, business-critical technology you see exactly where it can be better. You set technical direction, you dare to make choices and you get energy from building a strong in-house team together.
At least 5 years of experience in the JVM ecosystem, with relevant experience in Scala. A combination of, for example, Java and Scala works too.
From day 1 you can set technical direction and help make choices on architecture, quality and development practices.
You enjoy working on business-critical software that is already running, and you see how to make it smarter, better and more robust.
You want to build a good team as well as good software, and you think along actively about the engineers and expertise we need for it.
You combine backend development with a feel for data engineering. Experience with data pipelines, XML or NLP is a strong plus.
WHAT YOU’RE SIGNING UP FOR
You report to our Lead Backend Engineer and are part of Product & Tech, where backend, front-end, DevOps, UX and AI engineering build GenIA-L together. You get plenty of room and ownership. You largely decide how you spend your day and what you pick up, and if you think something matters, you can usually make it happen here. You start as Senior Scala Engineer and can grow into technical lead for all Scala engineers in the company, or even for the entire backend.
A good base salary and a standard 36-hour working week.
A year-end bonus of 4% of your gross annual salary and variable profit sharing of up to 6% of your gross annual salary.
23 days of annual leave and a personal benefits budget of 12%: 8% holiday allowance and 4% to spend as you like, for example on extra days off.
A solid pension scheme through PGB, including additional partner insurance.
A travel allowance of €0.25 per kilometre or a public transport allowance, plus an attractive bike scheme. Adjusted arrangements apply if you live less than 10 km or more than 60 km from the office.
Hybrid working: 2 days a week at our office in The Hague, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Room to grow. In your craft, in your role, in the organisation.
